About The Project

Project

SRS Group’s fabrication team completed in 2024 the manufacture and installation of a new multi-purpose aviary at Auckland Zoo, designed as a back-of-house facility to house a range of small animal species. This project was developed with a proactive approach to biosecurity, ensuring the Zoo is prepared for potential avian health challenges, including the possibility of bird flu outbreaks.

Working closely with the Zoo’s lead ornithologist, our team ensured every detail aligned with species-specific requirements, from spatial configuration and perch integration (or avoidance) to custom hatches and roof access. The aviary combines durability, safety, and functionality, using rigid mesh and frames fabricated entirely from 316 stainless steel, chosen for its superior corrosion resistance in Auckland’s marine-influenced climate. All internal fixings were flush-mounted to eliminate protrusions, ensuring animal safety and a clean, hygienic finish.

Fabrication demanded meticulous attention to detail, with components manufactured to exact tolerances for seamless assembly on-site. Installation presented unique challenges, including integrating the structure within a new habitat footprint and primary structure by others, and multiple trades.

The result is a robust, adaptable enclosure that supports Auckland Zoo’s mission of conservation and preparedness, providing a safe, controlled environment for birds and small animals while enabling the Zoo to respond effectively to emerging health risks.
