About The Project

The George Street Retail Quarter redevelopment is one of Dunedin’s most significant civic upgrades in decades, transforming the city’s historic retail precinct into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly destination. Led by Dunedin City Council and the Ō3 Collective (Isaac Construction, Jasmax, and Aecom), the project revitalised four city blocks with upgraded infrastructure, bespoke paving, public art, and cultural narratives that celebrate Kāi Tahu heritage.

As part of this transformation, SRS Group was contracted by Isaac Construction to deliver the catenary lighting system, a key feature that brings George Street to life after dark. Working in partnership with Ronstan Tensile Architecture, SRS was able to provide catenary PS1 engineering via Tensys, world specialist tensile engineering firm, while electrical engineering was handled by other contractors. SRS supplied and installed custom-designed catenary cables and luminaires that span the street, creating a striking visual experience and improving night-time safety. The design draws inspiration from Kāi Tahu narratives, with silvery blue lights symbolising makā (barracouta) darting across the street, complementing the cultural motifs embedded in the paving and street furniture.

The catenary system, maximises usable space and maintains the integrity of the streetscape. Using advanced structural cable technology and precision engineering, the installation ensures durability and performance in Dunedin’s urban environment. This solution reflects our commitment to delivering innovative, sustainable lighting that enhances public spaces and supports community identity.
