Tīramarama Way Catenary Lighting
A Landmark Light Installation in Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter

About The Project
Completed in stages between 2018 and 2022, Tīramarama Way is a pedestrian and cycle-only laneway at the heart of Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter. Developed as part of a 20-year urban regeneration initiative led by the Auckland Urban Development Office (formerly Eke Panuku), the laneway provides a unique east–west connection between Beaumont Street and Halsey Street.
Designed by Wraight Associates in collaboration with artist Lisa Reihana and in consultation with Mana Whenua, the space blends cultural storytelling with urban design.
Celebrating Māori Astronomy Through Light
The catenary lighting system, engineered and installed by Ronstan Tensile Architecture and SRS Group, with structural input from Tensys Engineers and lighting design by eCubed, features constellations Te Punga (Southern Cross) and Matariki. These celestial references are part of a broader narrative that honours the original 1841 shoreline of the Waitematā Harbour and the site’s historical role as a Mahinga Kai (food gathering place).
Technical Details
SRS Group played a key role in the precision installation of the catenary system, ensuring both structural integrity and visual impact.
- Suspension System: Cables tensioned to over 1000 kg support the lighting fixtures.
- Cable Design: A modified ACS2 structural cable system with custom wall connections and shackles for enhanced strength.
- Electrical Integration: A Carl Stahl mesh sock houses the electrical flex along the cables, maintaining a clean aesthetic.
- Installation: SRS Group’s rigging team executed the cable tensioning and alignment with meticulous attention to load distribution and safety.
